TechShop was fun. Learned how to operate the Laser Cutter for cutting, etching and scoring.

Classes:

Basic covered safety, equipment and basic technique. We learned how to use Corel Draw and the “printer” driver that sends instructions to the cutter. We learned how to start and stop jobs and signs to look for that might indicate a bad cut or a fire hazard. We also learned how to set the focus (AUTO FOCUS IS BAD). The class was 2 hours long and the instructor, Laura, answered tons of questions. Of particular interest was learning which materials work best with this laser.

Advanced was about an hour long. We covered a lot of Q&A as well as tips and tricks to make it easier to find the right settings (speed, power) for a given material.

The classes were great and the instructor was top notch.

Facilities:

The machine is an Epilog Helix Laser Cutter. It’s 45 watts. (Actually, there are two of them.)

The software is CorelDraw X3.

iPhone SDK: Finally! Looks great to me, but I am not happy about the ‘no background apps’ policy. I’d like 3rd party chat apps and feed readers to be able to alert me from the background. Hopefully, background capabilities are coming.

OS X Leopard’s “Alex” voice: Text to speech is normally pretty crappy. I’m glad Apple invested in a voice that speaks clearly, even if it does require 700MB of disk space!! I’m working on a simple OS X app that connects to Google Reader and reads articles aloud.

Jericho: Canceled AGAIN? Really? At least there’s still Torchwood, Doctor Who, Lost, BSG and Smallville (major spoilers in this week’s promo - be careful).

Arduino: I’m having a lot of fun with mine. An Arduino plus a series of BlinkMs is a great combination.

MacBook Air: I’ve had mine for 2 months and I love it. The combination of mobility, screen size and performance it provides makes it much more useful than the notebooks, umpcs, pdas and internet tablets I’ve used in the past. Meanwhile, the flexibility, usability and safety provided by OS X gives this machine a huge advantage over similar Windows-based laptops. It’s my main computer, now.

WaterField’s Racer-X Laptop Case: The Racer-X is perfect for me. Not too big, not too small. It stays upright do to a solid rectangular bottom, which is really nice - it makes it a little heavier but it’s worth knowing it’s not going to tip over. The Air is in a zippered into a lightly padded, secure pocket. The other zippered pocket is big enough to hold the charger, my cradlepoint PHS, a usb hub, a medium sized ora book or my Kindle, a tiny usb HD (for backups and extra storage) and some other misc stuff. It’s small enough that I have to think about what I want to keep in it, but not so small that I have to leave anything important behind. I bought the black version with leather handles. The build quality is terrific and I can see it lasting for a LONG time.

UPDATE (2/17/08): Code is available here.

I’m making a Knight Rider (KITT) Light Bar to celebrate the premier of the new Knight Rider Made-For-TV Movie (tomorrow night on NBC). I’m using an Arduino Diecimila board and 18 LEDs.

Here’s a picture from a few hours ago. The LEDs are now much more aligned and some of the wiring has since been cleaned up, but the photo will give you the general idea.

Materials (so far): FedEx box (temporary; looking for a suitable plastic container) with black construction paper for the housing. Arduino, 18 LEDs (wired to 9 output pins on the arduino - two LEDs in parallel per pin), 9 75 ohm resistors (note, 75 is not the right value, but they were the closest I had). The faceplate is made of cardboard, tissue paper (light diffusion) and some cheap car-window-sun-shade-material I found at Target.

Here’s what it looks like in action (this vid is from the afternoon, before the housing and faceplate were ready): kitt2.mov.

If you haven’t already, consider reading this article about the guys who built the real thing!

I’m ecstatic about the news that TechShop is opening right here in Menlo Park, CA - less than 2 miles from my office! 3D Printers, Laser Cutters and CNC machines in a workshop that only charges $30 a day?!?!?!

Here are some excerpts from their site to fill you in on the shop details and then head over to Make to learn about the Grand Opening event this weekend (I’ll definitely be there)!

Main Page:

TechShop is a fully-equipped open-access workshop and creative environment that lets you drop in any time and work on your own projects at your own pace. It is like a health club with tools and equipment instead of exercise equipment…a Kinko’s for geeks.

TechShop is for EVERYONE! If you already know how to use all the stuff at TechShop, that’s great. But most people only know how to use a few of the tools, machines and equipment at TechShop. If you want to learn about the equipment and tools you have never used before, you can take a short group “Building Block” class to get up to speed in about an hour, or take a more in-depth class on any subject to learn about it more fully. Don’t be afraid to try new things, no matter if it is welding, using a milling machine, working with fabrics and leather or plastics, or cutting keyways in a gear. The whole point of TechShop is to enable you with a wide variety of new capabilities so you can start to see the pathway that lets you make new and exciting things.

FAQs:

Our goal is to have the TechShop facility open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But initially, the hours will probably be 9 AM to 10 PM, 7 days a week.

We will have programs and classes for kids. We are still working on the details but kids and young adults (under 18) can work at TechShop with a parent or legal guardian.

We have priced TechShop Unlimited Monthly Access Passes at $100, and TechShop Unlimited Daily Access Passes at $30. Up through the TechShop Grand Opening weekend, you can also buy a TechShop Annual Unlimited Access Pass for $1,000.

I just picked up a box of Triklits from Mark of Network Wizards. I’ve been looking forward to these for a long time - I’m glad they are now available!

Triklits is a string of 24 lights. Each light can be assigned an RGB value. Inside each light are 3 leds (red, green and blue). The lights are $100 per set and have around 30 preset patterns including fades, blinking, etc. Each preset pattern has variations that you can set with a second button. I’ll put up a YouTube video tomorrow.

For an extra $25, you get a USB controller. This is where the real fun is going to be for me. The RGB values for every light can be changed 50 times per second. This is going to rock. C source code is supplied for the USB interface and is tested to work on XP.

I’ll update this post throughout the day as I play around with it (in between feeding Charlie, etc).

Thoughts:

These lights are BRIGHT.

The power supply never seems to get hot or even warm.

The lights seem to be well designed and well constructed.

You need a USB (printer style) cable and an RJ11 phone cable to connect the lights to your computer. I dug both out of my cable box.

Doh! Don’t have cygwin installed on this computer (how is THAT possible?). Installing now.

Attempted to make a video with my phone (CU320), but the lights are too bright and don’t look great with the crappy phone camera. I’ll stop by work tomorrow and use the company camera.

Cygwin install was painless as usual.

Mark’s notes suggest recompiling the test apps to specify the com port XP assigns your lights. Another option is to set the com port in device manager. Click on Ports, then Communications Port for USB4. Choose Port Settings, Advanced, Port Number. I set mine to COM 10, the one used in the test apps and everything works fine.

Other blog posts about Triklits and Mark’s Burning Man 2006 installation. Google Blog Search and Technorati. Phil at Make has some nice things to say, too!

YouTube has a video of Mark’s Burning Man creation (made of 100s of trilit strings). Another. More videos at the project site. Don’t look at this one if you are prone to motion sickness.

Recompiling the driver and the test apps works as expected.

The ethernet interface is going to be handy when it’s available.

I built a very simple c app that sets the light colors based on the contents of a url. I want to add more transitions to the program, so that’s the next step.

The supplied source code is easy to modify. I expect there will be several apps, soon, that will make it easy to customize patterns from your computer.

Update: I uploaded the app I wrote this weekend to download animations from a url to run on the lights. Details here.

Microsoft has a UMPC experience lab on site. Prototypes of the TabletKiosk eo, the Samsung Q1, the ASUS and the Founder are all there, along with really friendly staff.

It will cost $150 and will be out in a couple months. It’ll be neat to see projects published in Make adopt that platform - project costs will decline! Prototypes are at the conference. I saw a poster for Don Overholt’s inexpensive USB interface, too, but I couldn’t find him. His is $50 and is available now.
